Self defence is proven time and again to be an effective tool for women and girls. Here's some research that proves it:

 

The Office For National Statistics and the US National Institute of Justice say self-defence training can improve women's physical readiness to confront and escape from potential attackers and the ability to reduce the chance of escalation, but also reduce the level of injuries suffered​.

 

Studies by Kleck & Tark (2005), Reekie & Wilson (1993) and Ullman & Knight (1992), show that women who respond with physical and verbal resistance to the offender's violent attack significantly reduce the probability that a serious sexual assault would be completed.

 

"[...] women who resist their attacker are significantly more likely than nonresisters to avoid rape completion. This finding held across analyses for physical resistance, verbal resistance, or resistance of any kind." (Wong & Balemba 2018)

 

In the 1990's, German commissioner Susanne Paul examined 522 cases of rapes and attempted rapes to see whether fighting back was a good strategy. Result: fighting back had a 85% success rate.

 

Additionally, studies show that victims of sexual assault who fight back recover physically and mentally faster.

 

If attacked, self defence knowledge reduces the effects of attacks in domestic, work and social situations, leading to fewer injuries, less time off work, quicker return to work and social capacity, less personal blame and quicker bounce-back to bulid a more independent life quicker after an attack.

 


 

"Forceful physical resistance by victims was found to be unrelated to the use of physical force by the offender during or after the rape." (Ullman 1998)

 

"the frequently found correlation between physical resistance and injury of the woman might be the result of the initial level of the offender's violence and should not be used to discourage women from physically resisting rape" (Ullman & Knight 1992)

"any tactics that are ambiguous and not forceful, such as stalling, cooperating, pleading and screaming from pain or fear" increases the risk of injury and of the offence being completed to a deeper level. (Kleck & Tark 2005).
